Hesperia, California (High Desert News Online) — The Hesperia Unified School District announced that the Hesperia High School Scorpions boys basketball team has earned a trip to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 Championship game after a remarkable playoff run filled with discipline, resilience, and heart. The Scorpions will take on Bishop Amat on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 11:15 a.m. at Toyota Arena in Ontario.

This achievement marks just the second CIF Finals appearance in the program’s history — a milestone nearly two decades in the making. The last time Hesperia High reached the section championship, the city was still growing into the thriving desert community it is today. Their return to the finals is a proud reminder of the school’s growth, perseverance, and commitment to excellence, both on and off the court.

A Season of Determination

After clinching a share of the Mojave River League (MRL) championship, the Scorpions blazed through the postseason against some of Southern California’s top programs:

  • Round 1 (Feb. 11): Defeated San Clemente, 52–41, in front of a full home crowd.
  • Round 2 (Feb. 13): Handed the previously undefeated Elsinore Tigers (29–0) their first loss, 77–62, in one of the state’s biggest playoff upsets.
  • Quarterfinals (Feb. 17): Outlasted Rancho Verde, 55–53, in a tough road battle.
  • Semifinals (Feb. 20): Knocked off powerhouse Mater Dei, 57–52, in a raucous home matchup that will long be remembered in Hesperia sports history.

Leaders on the Court

The Scorpions’ playoff run has been powered by a talented roster with a reputation for teamwork and grit:

  • #5 Nolan Newman-Gomez: 26 points, 14 rebounds per game
  • #1 JJ Herd: 10 points per game
  • #3 Nate Hinojos: 8 points per game
  • #11 Kaisyn Talataina: 8 points per game
  • #4 Damian Byrd: 6 points per game

Their balanced offensive attack and defensive intensity have made them one of the most disciplined and exciting teams in the southern section.

Rallying a Community

For the Hesperia community, this isn’t just about basketball — it’s about pride. From parents and teachers to alumni and neighbors, the city has come together to support the Scorpions. The program’s journey reflects the values of perseverance and unity that define the High Desert spirit.

HUSD encourages families, alumni, and local residents to pack the stands at Toyota Arena and show their support as the Scorpions play for school and city honor.
