LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., July 4 (Laguna Beach Daily) — A stretch of ocean water off Thalia Beach in Laguna Beach was closed to swimming, surfing and diving Thursday after Orange County health officials said about 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said the closure covers a quarter-mile upcoast and a quarter-mile downcoast from Anita Street at Thalia Beach. Officials said the water will stay closed for at least three days, or until testing shows the area meets reopening standards.

County health officials said the spill occurred Thursday evening and tied it to a sewer-system problem. The sources reviewed for this report did not provide a consistent description of the exact failure.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said Orange County Environmental Health was assessing water quality and determining how far the beach and ocean closures should extend.

The health agency said it will continue water testing before allowing the area to reopen.
