LONDON, Oct. 3 (Infinite Headlines) — A dual British-Iranian national arrested in an investigation into a suspected plot involving RAF Fairford has been released on bail, The Washington Post reported, citing an announcement by authorities on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in London on Thursday, Oct. 1, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police also searched two properties in London.
He was the sixth person arrested and subsequently released on bail in the investigation, Newsday reported. RAF Fairford is a British air force station in England used by U.S. bombers, CNN reported.
Police said the first five suspects, British men in their 20s from the London area, were arrested near the base on Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses. They were later released on bail. NBC News reported that no charges had been filed against those five men at the time of its report.
Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, said Tuesday that officers found no explosives or improvised explosive devices in three vans, but recovered a quantity of petrol.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday that Britain had “strong indications” of Iranian involvement. That was his assessment of the suspected activity, not an established finding. Iran denied involvement.
Addressing the release of the first five suspects, Burnham said Wednesday: “It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions.”
President Donald Trump criticized the decision to grant those five men bail, saying, “I wouldn’t have done that.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said many people were “disturbed” by the decision.
ABC News Australia also reported that another British man had been questioned under caution.
