WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — The Senate rejected Sen. Tim Kaine’s Iran war powers resolution 50-47 on Wednesday, blocking a bid to limit President Donald Trump’s military authority over Iran after a closed-door lunch with Senate Republicans at the Capitol.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said Trump “raised his voice” during the meeting and that “I lost my temper” as the president pressed senators to drop the effort. Trump later thanked Senate allies on Truth Social and wrote that the vote “puts Iran on notice.”

Kaine, a Virginia Democrat, had sought to direct Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities involving Iran unless Congress authorized further action. The measure had already cleared a procedural vote last month by 50-47.

On the final vote, Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted yes. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky voted present, and Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted no.

The Senate vote followed House passage earlier in the month of a similar Iran war powers resolution.
