Hesperia, California (High Desert News Online) — The Hesperia Unified School District opened its campuses this week for its annual Principal for a Day event, welcoming local community leaders to experience a hands-on look at what it takes to run the district’s schools. The day concluded with a spirited “Backyard BBQ” at the district office, featuring a meal prepared and served by students in the district’s Culinary Career Technical Education (CTE) program.

The Principal for a Day tradition has become one of the Hesperia Unified School District’s most anticipated community events, giving local leaders—from business owners to civic representatives—a chance to experience a day in the life of a school principal. The program helps strengthen ties between the district and the broader High Desert community by promoting understanding of daily school operations and educational challenges.

Following the classroom visits and administrative tours, participants gathered for what organizers called a true hometown celebration: a Backyard BBQ luncheon hosted at the district office. The student-led Culinary CTE teams showcased their hands-on training by designing and preparing the full event menu, which featured smoky tri-tip, creamy mac and cheese, and fresh watermelon.

Students from Hesperia, Oak Hills, Sultana, Mojave, and Canyon Ridge High Schools collaborated to make the event a success, demonstrating teamwork, skill, and professionalism. Their participation not only highlighted the district’s growing CTE programs but also reflected Hesperia Unified’s long-term goal of preparing students for success in both college and career pathways.

Over the years, Hesperia Unified’s Principal for a Day has grown from a small outreach effort into an annual celebration of education, service, and community connection. The program underscores the district’s belief that schools thrive when supported by local families, volunteers, and civic organizations working together toward shared goals.

As one of the fastest-growing school districts in San Bernardino County, Hesperia Unified continues to invest in career readiness programs that give students practical experience while reinforcing traditional values of hard work, self-reliance, and community service. Events like this year’s BBQ highlight a strong partnership between education and local leadership—one that keeps the spirit of the High Desert alive and thriving.
