Lucerne Valley, California (High Desert News Online) – The High Desert community is invited to an extraordinary evening of stargazing and lunar exploration on April 12, 2025, at the Janice Horst Lucerne Valley Branch Library. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., attendees will gather to marvel at the cosmos using the library’s state-of-the-art observatory and telescopes. This free event promises a blend of science, fun, and community connection.

State-of-the-Art Observatory in Lucerne Valley

The Lucerne Valley Library’s observatory is a cutting-edge facility that opened last year. It features a 3-meter motorized ScopeDome, equipped with robotic telescopes capable of automatic focusing and rotation. This $200,000 project was developed in partnership with Tierra Luna Engineering and the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. The observatory allows visitors to view stars, galaxies, and planets in stunning detail.

What makes this observatory unique is its accessibility. All 32 branches of the San Bernardino County Library System can remotely operate it, bringing celestial wonders to communities across the region.

What to Expect at the Event

The April 12 event will center around the “Pink Moon,” the name given to April’s full moon. Smaller telescope stations will be set up for attendees to experience close-up views of this lunar spectacle. Families can also enjoy hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities designed to inspire curiosity about space.

Additional highlights include:

  • A presentation on the observatory’s capabilities.

  • An opportunity drawing with exciting prizes.

  • A showcase of astrophotography captured using the library’s telescopes.

“This gathering perfectly illustrates how libraries are transforming into vibrant centers of innovation and education,” said County Librarian Melanie Orosco. “We’re thrilled to highlight this incredible resource with an enchanting evening under the stars.”

Why Events Like This Matter

Stargazing events like this one are more than just a chance to look at the night sky—they are opportunities for education and inspiration. Observing celestial phenomena fosters curiosity about science and encourages lifelong learning. For children especially, these experiences can spark an interest in STEAM fields, potentially shaping future careers.

The observatory itself represents a commitment to making advanced technology accessible to everyone in San Bernardino County. By hosting events like this, the library system provides a space where families can come together to explore and learn.
