WASHINGTON, June 29 (DC Times Online) — Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said federal authorities have made seven arrests after vandals damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and that the case will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Burgum said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends Weekend” that investigators believe the damage ran about 350 feet and was cut with a box cutter or a similar sharp instrument. He said officials had also issued multiple citations and filed 18 police reports.
Publicly described totals have varied. President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that six people had been arrested and seven others cited, while the U.S. Park Police said five people had been arrested and five others had received federal citations. An Interior Department statement said there had been seven arrests, seven citations and 18 police reports.
A recent Interior Department court filing said the Reflecting Pool liner was cut with a sharp knife or razor. Burgum said fencing had been put up around the pool as repairs continued and as Washington prepared for July 4 events on the National Mall.
The accounts reviewed did not name all of the people arrested or cited, and they did not list any charges or case numbers.
