Apple Valley, California (High Desert News Online) – In the closely watched race for California’s State Senate District 19, incumbent Republican Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh has secured re-election over Democratic challenger Lisa Middleton. As of November 17, 2024, with all precincts reporting, Ochoa Bogh leads with 196,246 votes (54.4%), while Middleton has garnered 164.658 votes (45.6%).

Middleton, a Palm Springs City Council member and former mayor, conceded the race on November 12, expressing gratitude to her supporters and pledging cooperation with Senator Ochoa Bogh in representing Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Campaign Strategies and District Dynamics

The newly redrawn District 19 encompasses diverse regions, including parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, with cities such as Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Beaumont, Banning, Redlands, and Big Bear.

Senator Ochoa Bogh, first elected in 2020, is a former schoolteacher and realtor. Her campaign emphasized lowering gas taxes, enhancing border security, and advocating for parental rights in public education.

Middleton, aiming to become California’s first openly transgender state legislator, focused on job creation, affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, and protecting reproductive rights. She also highlighted her support for Proposition 3, which sought to enshrine marriage rights in the state constitution.

The district’s political landscape, blending conservative high desert areas with liberal urban centers, presented a competitive environment. Both candidates tailored their messages to resonate with this diverse electorate, leading to a closely contested race.

Senator Ochoa Bogh’s victory reflects her campaign’s effectiveness in addressing the district’s varied concerns and maintaining support across its heterogeneous communities.

High Desert News Online feels comfortable calling this race win for Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh.
