NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 6 (Our Newport Beach) — Newport Beach police said they arrested 402 people during Fourth of July celebrations, with roughly half of the arrests tied to one incident on the Balboa Peninsula on Saturday night.

After declaring the gathering an unlawful assembly, the department said more than 350 officers from Newport Beach and 17 regional law enforcement agencies worked to clear the area, restore emergency access and protect residents and visitors.

The city’s mayor said more than 400 people were arrested over about 36 hours. Police said that total was far above the 60 arrests recorded during the same holiday window last year.

CBS News Los Angeles reported that Newport Beach firefighters responded to more than 100 emergency incidents, including 10 fires, and transported 44 people to local hospitals. Police said the incident remained under investigation.
