Helendale, California (High Desert News Online) – Dr. William Laird will become the Helendale School District superintendent on July 1, 2025, marking a new chapter for the district’s 1,103 students and four campuses. The Board of Education’s unanimous approval reflects confidence in Laird’s proven leadership and vision for local schools.

Background of William Laird

Dr. Laird has devoted more than 20 years to public education, beginning as a middle and high school teacher before advancing through leadership roles. His career includes serving as Director of Educational Services in the Antelope Valley Union High School District, principal, assistant principal, and adjunct professor at local universities. He earned his Associate of Arts at Victor Valley College, followed by Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Master’s University, and completed his Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

Board Unanimously Approves Leadership Changes

On June 24, 2025, the Helendale School District Board of Education announced its unanimous vote to hire Dr. Laird, praising his extensive and successful career and commitment to student success. Board President Cindy Hensley highlighted his collaborative approach and focus on data-driven instruction as key assets for the upcoming school year.

Vision and Goals for Helendale School District

As superintendent, Laird plans to:

  • Elevate Academic Achievement: Implement targeted intervention programs to close learning gaps in reading and mathematics, with progress monitored through quarterly assessments.
  • Enhance Community Partnerships: Expand collaborations with local businesses, nonprofits, and Victor Valley College to provide mentorships, internships, and dual-enrollment opportunities.
  • Strengthen Student Support Services: Bolster counseling, special education, and English learner programs by recruiting additional specialists and leveraging state resources.

He emphasizes “building a culture of continuous improvement where every student is known, valued, and challenged” as central to his leadership philosophy.

Impact on the High Desert Community

Helendale School District serves a diverse student body of 1,103 pupils across four schools—Helendale Elementary, Riverview Middle, Academy of Careers & Exploration, and Independence Charter Academy—in the High Desert region of San Bernardino County. The district’s student-teacher ratio of 21.5 to 1 and a majority of economically disadvantaged learners underscore the need for strong leadership and targeted support. Laird’s appointment aims to optimize resource allocation and foster equitable access to academic and extracurricular programs.

Next Steps and Community Reaction

Laird will begin transitioning into his new role immediately, meeting with site principals, district staff, and community stakeholders throughout June. A formal public introduction is scheduled at the July Board meeting, followed by community “listening tours” at each school to gather input and set collaborative priorities for the upcoming year. Parents and local civic leaders have expressed optimism, citing Laird’s reputation for inclusive decision-making and his record of raising student achievement.
