HESPERIA, Calif., July 14 (Our Hesperia) — Travelers planning a visit to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area in Hesperia are being told to stay out of the water, with California State Parks posting a Danger Advisory and closing swim beaches amid a harmful algal bloom.

State Parks said sampling by the California Department of Water Resources found increased microcystin toxin levels at the lake. The park page says Silverwood Lake is monitored regularly, with water tests conducted weekly, and that the advisory is updated at entrances and other water-contact areas.

The recreation area, at 13990 Sawpit Canyon Rd. off Highway 138 and Cleghorn Road, is under instructions that bar swimming, wading, boating, waterskiing and jet-skiing. Officials also told visitors not to touch algae scum, let pets into or near the water, drink lake water or eat fish or shellfish from it.

State Parks says Silverwood Lake may experience natural algae blooms, and visitors are being directed to check posted advisories before arriving at the San Bernardino County destination.
