LOS ANGELES, July 15 (Our Los Angeles) — Los Angeles organizers have opened Games-time volunteer applications for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, launching one of the biggest staffing drives tied to the city’s return to the world stage.

LA28 said it is seeking up to 60,000 volunteers for what it calls the Volunteer Crew. The application portal opened July 14, 2026, the same day the organizing committee marked two years until the Olympics begin in Los Angeles.

What LA28 is looking for

According to LA28, volunteers will be assigned across eight categories: communications, driving, experience, medical, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology.

Some roles will require specialized skills. LA28 says that includes experience in medicine and language translation.

The organizing committee said most volunteer opportunities will be in the Los Angeles area, but assignments will also extend beyond the city. LA28 lists other host sites in Oklahoma City and soccer venues in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San José and San Diego.

Why volunteers matter

LA28 describes volunteers as a central part of how the Games will operate. In its announcement, the organization said, “Every great production needs a crew.”

Reuters quoted LA28 chief executive Reynold Hoover as saying recent World Cup success showed “the power of sport to unite people” and that “volunteers will be a key part of that experience.”

The Games-time volunteer portal was built in partnership with Deloitte, according to LA28.

What the timing means

The volunteer rollout comes as LA28 moves from planning into the more active phase of preparation for the 2028 Games.

LA28 says the Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14-30, 2028, and the Paralympic Games are scheduled for Aug. 15-27, 2028. The organization says Los Angeles will become the third city to host three Olympic Games, after 1932 and 1984, and that the 2028 Paralympics will be the city’s first.

Secondary coverage from AP, NBC Sports, Reuters, the Washington Post, Forbes and Olympics.com said Olympic volunteer service is expected to run from March through August 2028, with Paralympic service from August through September 2028.

Who can apply

LA28 says people who had already expressed interest will receive an email with next steps, but anyone may apply regardless of prior registration.

The organization also says it will give at least seven days’ notice before the application closes. It has not yet publicly listed the full deadline or the selection rules in the materials reviewed for this report.

Community volunteering is separate

LA28 also has a community volunteering program tied to local organizations across Los Angeles. On its volunteer page, the organization says that effort focuses on sustainability, restoration and the wellbeing of venue cities.

That program is separate from the Games-time volunteer push now underway.

For Los Angeles, the application launch is more than a staffing update. It is an early sign of how the city plans to fill the thousands of roles needed to stage the Olympics and Paralympics, from venues and transport to communications and medical support.
